Set #1

Phish, the iconic jam band known for their improvisational prowess, returned to Dayton, Ohio, with a breathtaking performance at the Wright State University Nutter Center. The anticipation in the air was palpable, as fans gathered in near capacity to witness the magic unfold on stage. The first night of this two-night extravaganza was nothing short of extraordinary, featuring an impressive setlist that spanned their extensive catalog.


Phish kicked off the night with "Sigma Oasis," the title track from their 2020 studio album. This choice set the tone for a harmonious evening of music, as they showcased their lyrical and melodic prowess. Following "Sigma Oasis," the band delved into the mesmerizing "The 9th Cube." With intricate instrumentals and rich harmonies, this song served as a testament to Phish's musical depth. The crowd erupted as they launched into "Theme From The Bottom." The band's tight performance, led by Trey Anastasio's guitar work, transported the audience to a different realm.


Phish continued to dazzle with "Cool Amber And Mercury." The ethereal soundscapes and complex time signatures showcased the band's musical virtuosity. The pulsating groove of "555" had fans swaying and dancing in unison. The audience was in the palm of Phish's hand, and the band masterfully controlled the energy. "Bathtub Gin" was a definite highlight of the first set, with its extended jam that allowed each band member to shine. It was a communal musical experience as the crowd and the band connected on a profound level.


"Broken Into Pieces" slowed the tempo down a bit, but it was no less powerful. The song's melancholic lyrics and intricate instrumentation resonated with the audience. "Reba" was an absolute gem in the first set, with its complex composition and Anastasio's soaring guitar solos. The crowd roared their approval as the band navigated through intricate musical landscapes.

Phish concluded the first set with "Chalk Dust Torture," a high-energy, crowd-pleasing number that left fans buzzing with excitement. It was an electrifying way to wrap up the initial part of the show.


Set #2:

The second set kicked off with "Mike's Song," which saw the band delving into a deep and exploratory jam. The energy in the venue reached new heights. Following "Mike's Song," Phish smoothly transitioned into "Prince Caspian," a beloved fan-favorite. The crowd sang along with joy, creating a beautiful atmosphere of unity. The funky grooves of "No Men In No Man's Land" brought a burst of energy to the set. The band's impeccable interplay and improvisation shone through in this segment. "It's Ice" provided a moment of intricate and experimental exploration. The band ventured into uncharted musical territories, mesmerizing the audience. The crowd was treated to the ethereal "Pillow Jets," a newer addition to Phish's catalog. Its dreamy atmosphere and celestial soundscapes had fans entranced.


A euphoric "Weekapaug Groove" followed, providing a powerful rhythmic release. The audience danced and celebrated, caught up in the infectious energy of the band. "Twist" featured extended improvisation, with the band weaving a musical tapestry that captivated the audience's attention. The interplay between band members was a sight to behold. As the second set drew to a close, "Slave To The Traffic Light" emerged as a triumphant and emotional conclusion. The soaring guitar work and heartfelt lyrics left the crowd in awe.


Encore:

Phish returned for the encore with "Joy," delivering a heartfelt and poignant performance that tugged at the heartstrings of everyone present. After "Joy," the band launched into "Buffalo Bill," a rare and unexpected choice that delighted fans. Trey Anastasio's comment about the song being a classic and how "they don't write 'em like that anymore" added a touch of humor to the night. "Wilson" kept the energy high as the show continued to astonish the audience with its unpredictability and sheer musical prowess. The night ended on a high note with "First Tube," an explosive and energetic instrumental piece. The band members gave it their all, leaving the crowd on a euphoric high.


Phish's performance at the Wright State University Nutter Center in Dayton, OH, show #1, was a masterclass in musical exploration and improvisation.
