SUM 41 STILL ROCKS!!!
Friday night the guys brought the energy and amazing musicality to The NorVA in Norfolk, Va. celebrating the 15 Year Anniversary of Does This Look Infected?
Sum41 is a talented band that definitely knows how to entertain as well as the opening bands Seaway and Super Whatevr!!
Sum 41 opened with ‘The Hell Song’ while a huge blast of confetti flowed through the air and the crowd went wild!
One of my favorite moments during a show is that wait…you know, when the lights dim…knowing the band is about to come on…the crowd rumbles….and then the artist steps on stage and the crowd completely loses it!!! That excitement, the facial expressions, the screams….unreal, unadulterated adrenaline and pleasure.
Highlights through the night included….Frank Zummo had an incredible drum solo!! They are also touring with original guitarist Dave “Brownsound” Baksh!! Deryck didn’t just belt out all the amazing tunes he would stop and talk with the crowd…which I am a HUGE fan of! They did a cover of “We Will Rock You” by Queen with red and white balloons going around the venue. Everyone was in a state of bliss…crowd surfing…singing along to every song….a huge circle mosh pit per Deryck request – it was just pure fun!
I was totally blown away. Sum 41 played for a good 90 minutes and the show was high octane and bursting with energy. It was obvious that Deryck and the guys were having a blast as well as everyone in attendance!
This is one show you don’t want to miss!!!
SUM 41 BIOGRAPHY
The crazy Canadian foursome from Ajax, Ontario all used to play in rival bands when they were in high school. They decided to join forces in 1996 and formed their own band made up of Deryck Whibley (Bizzy D) on vocals and guitar, Dave Baksh (Brown Sound) also on guitar and vocals, Steve Jocz (Stevo 32) on the drums and Jason McCaslin (Cone) on the bass. The band chose the name Sum 41 cuz they formed the band 41 days into the summer before grade 12.
Sum 41 was able to snag a record deal with Island Records in December of 1999 after Sum 41 gave the record execs an EPK (electronic press kit) jam-packed with videos of their live high-energy performances and even mischievous footage of the guys doing drive-bys with a super-soaker water pistol. Sum 41 released their first EP, Half Hour of Power in 2000 and have since landed some great gigs touring with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Blink-182, The Offspring and Social Distortion. Canada's five-member band Seaway make exuberant punk-pop and emo-rock. Formed in Oakville, Ontario in 2011, Seaway originally featured the talents of vocalist Ryan Locke, vocalist/guitarist Patrick Carleton, guitarist Andrew Eichinger, bassist Adam Shoji, and drummer Ken Taylor. Following the recording of several EPs, the group made its full-length album debut with 2013's Hoser. From there, the band garnered supporting slots with Major League, Driver Friendly, and others.
By summer 2014, they had signed with Pure Noise Records and delivered a fourth EP. The following year, they toured with Bayside and made appearances at several festivals including the U.K.'s Slam Dunk Festival and the Warped Tour. In October, 2015, Seaway returned with their sophomore album, Colour Blind, featuring the singles "Freak" and "Best Mistake." Well received, the album peaked at number three on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart. The band then joined the Wonder Years, Knuckle Puck, and others on tour.
In 2017, they delivered their third studio effort, Vacation, featuring production from Mike Green (All Time Low, 5 Seconds of Summer, Semi-Precious Weapons). Included on the album was the lead single "Apartment." Also that year, they covered the Chainsmokers and Halsey hit "Closer" for Punk Goes Pop, Vol. 7. [allmusic.com]
SUPER WHATEVR BIOGRAPHY
Orange County emo-punk quartet Super Whatevr was formed in 2016 by singer/guitarist Skyler McKee. Raised in northern California, he started out in the hardcore scene there, acting as a bit player in several bands but secretly writing his own songs. Later he moved south to L.A., where he had a spell in the band THRDVSN, working with pop producer Rob Kinelski. The combination of punk and pop influences informed his own songwriting. Moving to Huntington Beach in Orange County, he found an open and accepting alternative scene tolerant to a blend of styles. There, a friend encouraged him to record his own songs, and he set about putting a band together, recruiting guitarist Robert Rutan, bassist Thomas Waale, and drummer Luke Mensink. Super Whatevr's self-released debut EP, Good Luck, had a raw, cathartic, yet tuneful sound with emotional lyrics and thrilling guitar harmonies, channeling the spirit of early-2000s indie rock. Together with the band's persistent live presence, it gained them a sizeable fan base and attracted the attention of Hopeless Records, which signed them in 2017 and re-released their EP. Their debut full-length for the label, Never Nothing, arrived early in 2018, preceded by the singles "Bloomfield" and "For You." [allmusic.com]
