Elle King showcased her spunky nature, killer voice, and badass attitude incredibly at the NorVA as she walked out holding a red solo cup and opening with the energetic tune “Where The Devil Don't Go” and going right into “Playing for Keeps”.
King is so much more than what you hear on radio: her music is a crazy mix of country/soul/rock/blues…at times alternative – and shockingly rasta!!! This may seem like an insane mix at a concert, but looking at the audience that clearly ranged from under 21 to above 45, her eclectic sound matches her diverse fans.
Through the night King switched back and forth from guitar to banjo, as she started to get into some of the more razor-sharp numbers such as “I Told You I Was Mean” and the hilarious “Good To Be A Man“ she spoke of hurt feelings, broken hearts and those darn mean girls!! Her on stage banter was hilarious. Before starting “Good to be a Man,” she stated that she wrote the song after being dumped. “I’ve only been dumped once, and that will never happen again, because I’m amazing,” she joked.
I really liked her powerful voice and songwriting, but after seeing her live for the first time I can say it won’t be the last. She was captivating from the first moment she took the stage, and she had a way of bringing everyone around her closer. Make no mistake: Elle King is not a choirgirl, nor does she pretend to be, and that’s what makes her so mesmerizing — she could care less what people think of her.

Opening up the night was the indie-folk and psychedelic band, Horse Thief out of Oklahoma City. I did not know them but their music is quite
dreamy – with sounds similar to Band of Horses.
As the played smoothly and softly to the crowd you could clearly see that they truly loved what they were doing. The chemistry was there and itshowed in their music and set.
Their newest album is out now called Fear In Bliss, which is comprised of beautiful melodies and an embedded chorus.
