Billy Joel brought his "New York State of Mind" to the Queen City!

Great American Ballpark was not big enough for all of Billy Joel’s Hits!

It was my first Billy Joel concert and to have the opportunity and privilege to photograph and write a review for this show is unbelievable.

September 10, 2021, the rescheduled concert from the previous year due to Covid, I think people were ready for it, with nearly 37000 people in attendance at The Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, home of the Cincinnati Reds. At 8:20 the lights went down, and the Stadium went crazy! Billy Joel took the Stage, and the crowd went to their feet and did not sit for over 2 hours.

From the beginning of the show until the very last song, Billy Joel had the crowd singing at the top of their lungs and loving every minute of it.  My wife and I talk about this all the time and wonder what it must feel like for an artist like Billy Joel to play a song like Piano Man, and listen to a crowd of that size to sing your songs. The electricity of that moment for myself gave me goosebumps, and the hairs standing on the back of my neck as I turned around and  watched all the cell phone lights in the stadium waving back and forth to the music. You couldn’t ask for anything better than that.

The stage was set up in the outfield, and with his massive video screens with a spectacular light show. It made for an incredible backdrop. One of the special moments of the night was his tribute with “New York State of Mind” for the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, the video screens were filled with the skyline of New York City, and you could feel the emotion from him when he introduced the song, and sang that special moment for everyone.  In front of my wife and I sat an elderly gentleman with his wife. This man sang along with every song Billy played. He knew every word to every song. Billy Joel does not have a set age group of fans. Billy’s die hard fans range from young children to our oldest generation. Thank you to all the parents for introducing them to great music, and keeping it alive. Every single person in that stadium that night walked away with huge smiles on their faces because they knew they just got to see one the greatest artists, and shows they will ever get the chance to see in their lives.

As a concert and music photographer I think for many like myself there is a Bucket list of artists that you want to get, for me definitely Billy Joel!  We truly will remember this concert for the rest of our lives.
